It’s Episode 76 of Dog Blessed with Jodi Jarvis-Therrian and as she continues to help people understand different breeds of dogs, this week, she’s bringing in one of the most misunderstood of the breeds a pit bull. Emily Schmitt is her guest and aficionado of her pitty, it’s a great episode with lots to learn.

One of the key points that comes out is how pit bulls were bred and for what purpose. They were originally bred to herd feral cattle. That’s a dog that’s going to require some strength and determination. Knowing that they are strong in both physicality and mindset is a great starting point. With that strength comes intelligence and memory. Intelligence in the idea that pit’s are whip smart and memory could be a double edged sword. Good in the fact that they probably won’t forget their family and who they are protecting, might be a bit of a challenge when it comes to a deeper memory. A memory like a hunting instinct that triggers when they see a cat or a rabbit. One thing to keep in mind too, they often don’t know their size and strength and what could be considered playing to the dog, could be the end for a rabbit.

Jodi presents the facts about these breeds so you can understand what you may be getting in to if you are adopting, or seeking out a pet to buy for your home. It’s in the hopes that understanding leads to smart decisions and lifelong relationships and one less animal in a shelter.
